THE EASTER LILY
By N.F.S. Grundtvig
(The final verses of, Paaskeliljen, a long poem in dialogue, translated by Peter Jorgensen)
|
THE ANGEL GABRIEL: Lord Jesus arises, Tremble ye Romans! Seize on your weapons! The grave now is open. Seasoned old warriors Stand if you can! Dulled is the sword, Severed the shield, Tumbled in dust!
CHOIR OF ANGELS Tired is the dragon, Conquered is death, Won has the lion, Life comes to all that believe.
Voices of humans Tone out and sing! The light and the life To darkest of Earth The lion has given!
Awaken ye pious, Gone is the week, Ended the night. Light was your longings Burst now your prison, Lit is the light!
Greatest Redeemer To you shall bow Thrones of all mortals As stars to the sun,
Souls of all humans Deeply bow down Before your redeemer Your burdens He lifted Atoned for your sins.
Ring now from nation to nation Ring over nations The holy name of the Lord. Let echo the sound of His name Melt let all hearts in the sound. |
|
Humans shall live in His name Jesus, the purest Jesus, who suffered for us on the cross Jesus, who rose from the grave all in splendor Jesus, the name which alone Peace to the heart can restore, Peace from our God:
THE ANGEL GABRIEL (To the guard) Flee now ye heroes Hide in the scabbard Now, all your gleaming swords; Cool now your tempers The Spirit no longer assail. Go and proclaim: Who is the sinner, And who is God.
(To the women) Lift up your vision, Up in the blue, Thence shall all nations Find solace and light.
Comfort your sorrow, Still now your tears, For Jesus is near, Not where they laid him, But right where He said. So go there to meet him, For He is arisen, Burst is the prison, Jesus awaits you with joy.
Easter Lily, white and pure, Lovely, living symbol-flower In my heart I can be sure Death to life has lost its power. He arose, as we confess! Present is He us to bless! Living in what pallid lay, Bright and clear on Easter Day. |
