HIGHLIGHTS of the May 2007 Issue

Greetings to our Danish Canadian neighbors, who are gathering this month in Jasper for the Danish Heritage Seminar in the Canadian Rockies. Rolf Christensen has graced this issue with an article on the 50th anniversary of the European Union, an important subject he will be addressing at the gathering in Jasper.

Annette Andersen’s cover "Bloom Where You are Planted" reminded me so much of a little known story by Soren Kirekegaard, "The Lily of the Field," translated by my father many years ago, that I had to find and include it. The theme of blooming where planted, resonates with Jante Law, the subject of this month’s postscript, and also with this month’s poem, "Introspection" by A.K. Stauning. Stauning was born in Nøtrup, Denmark. He came to America as a young man, and pursued work as a lawyer and a journalist in several midwestern communities. He lived in Tyler, Minnesota for fifteen years, where he was elected the county attorney for Lincoln County, and edited the Tyler Journal. This poem is from his book, "Plain Poems for Plain People".

We are delighted to celebrate Mother’s Day with Anton Berg’s tribute to his mother and Thorvald Hansen’s tribute to a very special library.

In April, Grand View College presented The Danish Heritage Preservation Award for 2007 to Mark Nussle at Studenterfest: "In recognition of outstanding commitment to preserve Danish history and Grand View College heritage." Mark attended Grand View College, Ronshoved Hojskole in Rinkenaes, Denmark, and graduated from Drake University with a BA in History. At Grand View, Nussle led the Grand View Folk Dancers and revived the Danish Gymnastics Program. In 2005, he retired after selling his business, Viking Metal Co. Currently, he serves on the board of the Danish Heritage Museum. Mark and his wife Lorna Kay (Fisher) of Des Moines, live in Palos Park, IL where they raised their three children: Jim, Karri and Ilene. Mark ‘s thoughtful review of the Studenterfest’s play, "Our Town" is included in this issue as well as his remarks made at the award ceremony. Mark adds this comments, "I can’t believe that I will join that 50-year Alum group next year. There were not many alums from the Anniversary year "57," but quite a few from the 40s and some earlier. I missed seeing many classmates. If you are out there, make plans for next year. It was good to be back."
